Biography
Maulana Fateh Muhammad Jalandhry was a renowned Pakistani scholar, poet, and linguist who is best known for his work on the translation of the Quran into modern Urdu. He was born on January 1, 1899, in Jalandhar, Punjab, India (now Pakistan).
His father, Maulana Noor Muhammad, was also a prominent religious scholar and teacher.
Jalandhry received his early education from his father “Furthermore, he continued his studies at a renowned educational institution, ” Madrasa-e-Islamia in Lahore. He then enrolled at the Oriental College in Lahore, where he studied Arabic, Persian, and Urdu literature.
After completing his education, Jalandhar became a teacher at various schools and colleges, including Oriental College in Lahore. He also served as the chief editor of the Urdu-language newspaper, “Inqilab,” for several years.
Jalandhry’s most significant contribution to Islamic scholarship was his translation of the Quran into modern Urdu.
He started working on the translation in the 1930s, and the first edition was published in 1951. The translation, which is known as “Tafseer-e-Quran,” is still considered one of the most accurate and reliable Urdu translations of the Quran.
Apart from his work on the Quran, Jalandhry was also a prolific poet and writer. He wrote several books on Islamic history, literature, and theology, as well as poetry in both Urdu and Persian. Maulana Fateh Muhammad Jalandhry passed away on July 12, 1982, in Lahore, Pakistan, at the age of 83. “He is commemorated as among the most highly regarded and esteemed” prominent Islamic scholars and linguists of the 20th century and his contributions to Islamic scholarship continue to be recognized and celebrated today.
