6th Ramzan – Wafaat of Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A): The Martyr of Mautah
Categories
The 6th of Ramzan marks the Wafaat (martyrdom) of one of the most courageous companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ — Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A). His life is a story of devotion, bravery, and unwavering faith. A man of both intellect and courage, he was not only a warrior but also a poet whose words inspired countless hearts toward the path of Islam.
Early Life and Embrace of Islam
Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A) was among the Ansar of Madinah, belonging to the Khazraj tribe. He was one of the early converts to Islam and pledged allegiance to the Prophet ﷺ during the Second Pledge of Aqabah. From that moment, he dedicated his life to the cause of Allah and became one of the most trusted companions of Rasool Allah ﷺ.He was known for his wisdom, eloquence, and poetic talent — often using his verses to defend Islam and encourage Muslims during times of difficulty. His Love for the Quran and the Prophet ﷺ
Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A) was deeply attached to the Holy Quran. He would spend long hours reciting and reflecting upon its meanings. He often encouraged others to stay steadfast in their Iman and to remember Allah even in times of hardship. He loved the Prophet ﷺ immensely. Once, when the Prophet ﷺ asked his companions what they loved the most, Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A) replied,“Ya Rasool Allah ﷺ, I love Allah and His Messenger more than anything else.”This sincere love became the driving force behind his bravery and sacrifice.Role in Battles and His Martyrdom
Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A) participated in several major battles, including Badr, Uhud, and Khaybar. His courage and leadership made him one of the key figures among the Ansar. However, his most notable and final contribution came during the Battle of Mautah. When the Prophet ﷺ sent an army to face the Byzantine forces, he appointed Hazrat Zaid bin Harithah (R.A) as commander, followed by Hazrat Ja’far bin Abi Talib (R.A), and then Hazrat Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A) — in case the first two were martyred. As fate would have it, both Zaid and Ja’far (R.A) were martyred in battle, leaving Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A) to take command. Despite being wounded, he fought valiantly and recited these beautiful verses before his martyrdom:“O my soul! If you are not killed, you will still die one day — so why not embrace martyrdom in the path of Allah?”With these words, he charged into the battlefield and was martyred, achieving the highest honor a believer could ever desire — Shahadat (martyrdom).Virtues and Legacy
The Prophet ﷺ deeply admired Abdullah bin Rawahah (R.A). When the news of his martyrdom reached Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ’s eyes filled with tears, and he said:“Your brother Abdullah bin Rawahah is in Jannah, reciting the Quran with the angels.”He was a man of immense faith, unshakable courage, and a heart full of love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ. His poetry, his wisdom, and his sacrifice continue to inspire believers to this day.Dua and Wazifa for Courage and Faith
