Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A) was among the earliest converts to Islam. He belonged to a humble family in Makkah and once worked as a shepherd. Though physically small and seemingly weak, spiritually he was one of the strongest pillars of Islam.
He accepted Islam at a time when Muslims were oppressed and tortured publicly. Yet, his courage never weakened. He stood firm beside the Prophet ﷺ with unshakeable faith.
Rasulullah ﷺ loved him dearly and once said:
“Whoever wishes to recite the Qur’an as fresh as it was revealed, let him recite it as Ibn Mas’ood recites it.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
This hadith alone is enough to show his unmatched position in the history of Qur’anic recitation.
His Courage in Publicly Reciting the Qur’an
At a time when Muslims feared the Quraysh, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A) became the first person to recite the Qur’an publicly in Makkah. He stood near the Ka‘bah and loudly recited Surah Ar-Rahman.
The Quraysh brutally beat him until he bled, yet he returned the next day and recited again. This incident reflects his fearlessness, love for the Qur’an, and unwavering faith.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A) was not only a reciter but also:

He later became a teacher in Kufa, where thousands of great scholars learned Qur’an and Fiqh through his knowledge.
His Relationship with Rasulullah ﷺ
Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A) had a unique closeness with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He would:
Walk beside him

Listen to the Qur’an directly from him
Once the Prophet ﷺ asked him to recite the Qur’an. He replied, “Should I recite it to you while it was revealed to you?” The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Yes, I love to hear it from others.”
As he recited Surah An-Nisa, tears flowed from the blessed eyes of Rasulullah ﷺ. This moment shows the spiritual depth of his recitation.
His Simplicity and Zuhd (Detachment from Dunya)
Despite his immense knowledge and high status, Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A) lived a life of extreme simplicity. He wore simple clothes, ate little food, and stayed detached from worldly desires.
Once someone mocked his thin legs. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“By Allah, they weigh heavier than Mount Uhud on the scale of deeds.”
This teaches us that true worth lies in faith, not appearance.
