 حسین ابن علی رضی اللہ عنہ شروع میں 60 ہجری میں ذوالحجہ کے مہینے میں موجودہ عراق کے شہر کوفہ کے سفر کے ارادے سے مکہ سے روانہ ہوئے۔ اہل کوفہ نے ان کو متعدد خطوط بھیجے تھے جن میں اموی ظلم و جبر کے مقابلہ میں عدل و انصاف اور اسلامی اصولوں کی بحالی میں ان کی قیادت اور مدد کی درخواست کی گئی تھی۔ تاہم، یہ سفر مکمل طور پر سیاسی تحفظات سے محرک نہیں تھا۔ یہ سچائی، انصاف اور اسلامی اقدار کے تحفظ کی جستجو تھی۔ حسین ابن علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے اپنے گہرے احساس ذمہ داری سے رہنمائی کرتے ہوئے عقیدے کی حرمت اور امت مسلمہ کی فلاح و بہبود کی کوشش کی۔
